Do you have acne? The vast majority of teens experience it, and many adults do, too. If you have the unsightly, uncomfortable blemishes characteristic of this inflammatory skin condition, contact Integrated Dermatology of West Palm Beach. Board-certified dermatologists, Dr. Barry Kuttner and Dr. Kathleen Herne, understand the causes of and the treatments for acne. Rest assured they can help you.

What is acne?

You know it when you see it or if you have it. Acne consists of whiteheads, blackheads and reddened papules and pustules across the face, neck, shoulders, and chest. Blemishes occur at the sebaceous, or oily, glands of the skin.

Causes of acne are many. Frankly, they are a bit mysterious as well and vary from person to person throughout the life cycle. While many people believe poor hygiene and dietary habits are the main causes, this proves not to be true.

The American Academy of Dermatology says that the hormone fluctuations of puberty and menopause often drive acne breakouts as can stress. When acne blemishes appear, they may become infected and inflamed because of an ordinary skin bacteria called p. acnes. Infection can progress to cystic acne which frequently scars the skin.

How your West Palm Beach Dermatology can help

Acne can be managed, particularly with expert help from Dr. Kuttner or Dr. Herne at Integrated Dermatology of West Palm Beach. The dermatologist will examine your skin, take a medical history and prescribe some common sense and medical interventions which will heal your skin and help prevent or limit future breakouts.

Treatment plans may include:

  • Over-the-counter medications (creams, ointments and washes)
  • Benzoyl peroxide, Tretinoin (vitamin A), antibiotics or hormonal medications (birth control pills to regulate hormone levels)
  • Twice daily washing (gently, using just the fingertips) and after strenuous workouts
  • No squeezing of blemishes
  • Limiting fatty foods
  • Drainage and extraction, an in-office service which removes big, stubborn acne cysts
  • No tanning or excessive sun exposure
  • Daily shampooing if your hair is oily

Yes, it's frustrating...
